What is SEO

SEO Definition

Search engine optimization is commonly referred to as the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines through the use of "Natural" or organic un-paid search results as opposed to paid inclusion.

Simple Terms

Basically, when someone does a search in Google, Bing or Yahoo, the results that you see on the center of the page are the search results; the results listed on the first 2 to 3 pages are usually well optimized sites.  The farther down in search results (pages after about 3) the less likely it is that your customers are going to find you and your services or the products you provide.

SEO helps you to land on those first few results for certain keywords and keyword phrases that work best for your business.

Organic Search Vs. Pay Per Click

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) is an advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content websites or blogs, where advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an ad to visit the advertiser's website.  Advertisers bid on keywords that they believe their customers are using to find their products or services.  When a user types a keyword matching the advertiser's keyword list, or views a page with relevant content, the advertiser's ad may be shown.

With PPC advertising you bid for the top spot and the highest bidder combined with page quality wins that position.  You then actually have to pay when someone clicks on your ad.  With Search Engine Optimization (SEO) you do not have to pay when someone clicks on your link nor do you have to do any bidding.  SEO listings also tend to carry more weight among searchers.  They appear in the center of the page where the readers attention is more focused.
